Valedictorian of QEA: Vince Wang

When he first started high school in QEA, Vince Wang was a rock boy with long hair who just wanted to follow what his parents wished him to do: attend a good college and then, get a decent job.

However, the daily routine didn’t give a sense of fulfillment to Wang. He found himself aimless. In order to revamp, he did a bold decision.

“I shaved my hair,” he said. “Though I’ve been keeping it for almost half a year, I needed to make some change, and this is the first step.”

Since then, Wang was always found at the front of the class, carefully taking notes carefully. Understanding his situation, the career planner of QEA had many conversations with Wang. Through the hard work of both of them, Wang finally found where his passion: mathematics.

“I believe math can make me smarter because it can develop my ability in logic,” he said. “Solving problems are fun, and I feel happy and proud of myself when I finally get the answer.”

Wang’s math improved rapidly, and he became one of the best students on his grade. He always helped his classmates before exams. Gradually, Wang was clear about his goals: take the math major at the University of Waterloo.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t good at language, only getting a score of five in the first IELTS practice. So, he decided to shift his focus to languages. With the efforts of the teachers and himself, he finally met the language requirements for university – in one semester.

This March, Wang received the conditional admission of Business Administration (WLU) and BMath (UW). The major includes 4 semesters of paid internships, and guarantees employment after graduation.

At the commencement, Wang and his friend sang, and played the guitar and the harmonica. Wang’s years in QEA were mixed with happiness and hardships. The school witnessed his growth, and Wang sent his best wishes to the high school through songs.

His father expressed his gratefulness to QEA, saying that, thanks to the school, Wang started to enjoy studying and became more confident in himself.

“I’m glad that I can be at the University of Waterloo and study the major I love,” said Wang. “Thank you QEA, for helping me.”
