ESL/International

Students have a variety of needs when it comes to the study of the English language. For some, it is essential to work on the fundamentals. For others, the academics and communication techniques that universities require: essay and report writing, presentations, group discussions. Others need to polish their business skills in order to jumpstart their professional careers in an international environment.

With this in mind, our English as a Second Language Program is an intensive course, moduled in a variety of subjects, with difficulty levels ranging from elementary to advanced. The students learn English in a Canadian classroom environment.

Pathways to English:

The chart below shows how most English language learners may progress through their ESL and/or ELD courses and into mainstream English courses. Not all students will follow this sequence exactly, and individual students may vary in the rate at which they progress through the levels.

Through the ESL lessons, students will:

• Learn to communicate clearly and effectively.

• Develop good reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

• Improve and expand their vocabulary, comprehension, conversation and pronunciation skills.

• Have opportunities to practise and perfect their English both inside and outside the classroom.

• Be well-prepared for the Academic English Program, which will prepare them for university studies.
