University Admission Guidance Seminars

Our Vice Principal Simon held a Personal Statement Workshop. With our Grade 11 and Grade 12 students in attendance, Simon outlined the steps required to write a strong personal statement. The discussion highlighted the importance of personal statements, emphasizing how they present a more complete image rather than academic transcripts alone. He asserted that an impressive personal statement will “make you stand out as a real person” with thoughts and experiences at a depth to which a transcript could never show. A well written personal statement can convey your value and unique traits to Admission officers.

During the workshop, Simon asked the students to list their dream degree program and research relevant courses pertaining to that program immediately. Then he asked the students to ponder the following questions:

-Why would you like to study this program?

-Why are you a good candidate for this program (any relevant experiences and skills)?

-Do you possess any other unique qualities (other than academic performance) that you would like others to know about?

By carefully considering the questions posed, students were able to develop a draft right away. Simon also emphasized the importance of reviewing and revising one’s personal statement and seeking help. A good personal statement may need several drafts prior to submission. Additionally, soliciting help from one’s teacher and counsellor can prove to be invaluable as they can give you professional feedback from an Admission officer’s perspective!

If you need help with your application, feel free to contact your teacher and counsellor today. Remember time management is key, therefore do not leave until the last minute!
