You might have heard the name of United Nations; an organization that maintains peace and security among countries and improves countries’ relationships. This organization is what the world needs. An intergovernmental system that seeks to bring justice to the world.
Currently in the world, there are tons of countries that deeply need the help of such organizations; Syria, Iran, Ethiopia and etc. These countries are having civil wars and they’re people are being aggressively suffocated, arrested and then tortured just for speaking up and asking for their basic rights. Organizations like United Nations can bring an end to this. This is why their existence is important and in fact, I personally believe that there should be more organizations like this.
We had a presentation about United Nations and Model United Nations which is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.
To be honest, it was a really useful presentation. For instance, I learnt about the committees in UN and how they observe so I’m going to share a summary with you. One of these committees, is security council.
In security council, they take care of safety and security issues; North Korea’s nuclear program is one of their matters, for example. China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are the five permanent members of this council that also have veto power.
Economic and social council, trusteeship council and international court of justice are some other committees in UN. There are also lots of committees in Model UN; such as General assembly, Economic and social council, Security council, Human rights council, crisis committees and etc. The committee structure of Model UN is the chairs as the leaders and most important ones, then delegates and afterwards admins who can also be known as staff cause most of their job is helping and assisting delegates.
At the outside of the room, there are also directors and secretariats that are mostly responsible for organizing the event. Although the event is a simulation, but it will be taken very seriously so the participants will not feel any difference comparing to the real event. Another tip about Model UN is that the aim is not arguing with other delegates, therefore beside attire and discipline, respect to others is one of the essentials in this program. It’s just an experience in order to self and academic improvement, thus, people by choosing different roles, will gain all kind of experience afterwards. For example a delegate will have the chance to know and understand his country’s history, relationships, strengths and weaknesses and etc.
Overall, I hope that one day comes that we will not need any organization like United Nations or such a kind. But it’s not that day though. So as long as there are injustice and various issues, we need United Nations and organizations like it more than anything and one of the ways to understand and know them better is by attending programs like Model UN that will also add to our own knowledge and experience.
